Markham Pickleball Club

MPC is a shining example of what can be done when clubs and communities work together for mutual benefit

Markham Pickleball Club 1

Markham Pickleball Club (MPC) was incorporated in January 2020.

Community members collaborated with city staff to develop plans, policies and agreements to grow the sport in Markham.

Markham Pickleball Club is also a FINALIST for Canada's Best Pickleball Club of 2023.

Voting runs from Sept. 15, 2023 until Oct. 15, 2023.

During Covid, MPC advocated for the City to create the courts at the Markham Civic Centre in the parking lot. These courts were used in the summers of 2021 and 2022. Our membership at that time was approximately 200.

The Grand Opening of Dedicated Courts at Cornell Park

In 2023, Markham welcomed the opening of the first eight dedicated, lit pickleball courts at Cornell Park, the current home for MPC and its 600 plus members.  MPC has an agreement with the City of Markham to operate as a community Club at Cornell Park with court times shared with the public.

On July 22, we held our official opening with a Lion Dance and dignitaries from all three levels of government.

The club operates from May 1 to October 31 weather permitting. During club hours, MPC has volunteer court hosts who provide a sense of community to all MPC members. They welcome and assist new members to the club and ensure that all players follow a fair rotation system.

Player Development, Lessons and a Pending Junior Program

MPC is currently working to fulfill the expectations of Pickleball Canada’s Long Term Player Development guideline. For adults, the club offers learn to play lessons for beginners and “play better” lessons for the more experienced. Individual instruction is also available. MPC is planning to start a junior program in 2024 and hopes to participate in an interclub league with other clubs across York and Durham Regions.

The game of pickleball offers people a great form of exercise in a fun and social manner. It is inclusive and age agnostic.  MPC members range in age from 17-85.  Specifically for the City of Markham, the Markham Pickleball Club delivers club-level play geared towards community members of different abilities, programs geared towards the development of higher-level amateur play and the ability to host sanctioned tournaments.

MPC is hosting the second annual Pickleball for Possibilities tournament scheduled for September 16 and 17.  True North Pickleball is running this event.  All net profits will be going to the Holland Bloorview Children's Rehabilitation Hospital. More details about the tournament are on Pickleball Brackets.

Top Ranked Players and Committed Volunteers

MPC is proud that it is home to a broad range of players including top-ranked athletes in Ontario and Canada across all divisions. Our members and volunteers form the heart and spirit of our club.  On any given day, you will see plenty of smiles, competitive fun and camaraderie on the pickleball courts of MPC as we get together to share in our love of the game.
